I am an Ashe County native who attended Ashe Central High School and Wilkes Community College in the early 1980s. Following a successful business and retail management career, I returned to college to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University in 2006.  Throughout my fifteen-year teaching career, I have been awarded many grants to enhance the educational experience in my classroom and school.  Currently, I am the 2020-2021 Kenan Fellow for Teacher Leadership from NCSU and  is sponsored by the NC Farm Bureau Federation to research and create an educational magazine about NC Christmas Trees.  I am passionate about education and the success of all students.  I look forward to this personalized experience to assist students in their growth and achievements in education and their futures.

Elementary ELA & Math

I am a retired teacher with a degree in Elementary Education (Grades K-6) and a certification in Academically Gifted (Grades K-12).  I have presented professional development for classroom teachers to assist them in implementing differentiation strategies.  I have also provided parent engagement workshops to empower parents to be strategic advocates in their child’s academic journey.  It brings me great joy to encourage and equip students with the tools they need to be successful lifelong learners.

My husband and I moved to Ashe County a year ago into our home on the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway.  We have five grandchildren and two grand dogs!  We look forward to many adventures in the “Coolest Corner of North Carolina”!

Middle School ELA & Math - Exceptional Children Specialist

My name is Alecia Giles, and I have worked in the Ashe County School system for 25 years. This is my ninth year as an Exceptional Children’s teacher at Ashe County Middle School. I currently teach 7th grade Language Arts and Math. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education – General Curriculum from East Carolina University, and I have additional certifications in Middle Grades Language Arts, Middle Grades Math and K-12 Reading Instruction. In 2019, I obtained a master’s degree in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in English. I am a trained instructor of the NCSIP Course, Reading Research to Classroom Practice, providing professional development for teachers in Ashe and surrounding counties in the northwest region of North Carolina.
My favorite activities include reading, spending time with my family, going to the beach, and shopping with my friends. I love helping students reach their full potential, and I want them to see the importance of becoming life-long learners. We all come from different places and have different experiences – that’s what makes us who we are. Everyone has a different story, and everyone’s story matters.

Math

Born and reared in Ashe County, I am a proud mother to my wonderful son, Jackson, and caregiver to my father, Rick.  I like to think of myself as highly adaptive and ambitious to the core.  I am a substitute teacher in Ashe County Schools to students from kindergarten through twelfth grade and tutor students from kindergarten to college in both math and science.  I have an Associate’s Degree in both science and the arts, with an extended education in advanced mathematics.  This is the first year in my new career but I am having, “the time of my life”, as I engage in learning with my students.  I look forward to a future full of adventures and novel experiences.

High School Math—all levels

I am a sixth year high school math teacher with formal experience teaching Math I, II, III, and Discrete Mathematics. I am familiar with all levels of high school mathematics, up to and including AP Calculus. Despite never teaching those AP classes, I have experience tutoring students at Ashe County High School in those courses. I was trained specifically for the new Discrete Math standards and am familiar with the new course – Math IV – which will be implemented during the 2020 – 2021 school year.

I am a native of North Carolina, born in the beautiful capital of Raleigh. However, I moved around a lot as a child, living in many states, including New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arizona. I returned to North Carolina at age six and attended public schools in Wake and Chatham counties throughout my school career. After this, I attended Appalachian State University and received a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics education.  I completed student teaching at Ashe County High School in 2015, where I have been employed since. I look forward to interacting with students whom I possibly would not have had a chance to meet in the normal school setting

Elementary ELA & Math

I am a kindergarten teacher at Mountain View Elementary School. I’m going into my third year of teaching. Before my teaching career, I served as a full time K-6 tutor at Mountain View. I’m blessed to be able to go to a job I love every day. I was honored to be named Ashe County School’s Beginning Teacher of the year 2022-2023 and a state finalist for Beginning Teacher of the Year. My favorite part of teaching/tutoring is seeing the light bulbs go off when a child has an “aha” moment. That makes every bit of the effort worthwhile for me.

I live with my husband, Josh, and two dogs in my childhood home in Jefferson. My hobbies include walking, playing tennis, reading, and crafting. My favorite quote is “Progress over perfection.” I am looking forward to building relationships with our TLC students.
